The "drive for perfection" is built into our line of FireLite portable external drives. Palm-sized, durable and stylish with outstanding performance and capacity, FireLite offers the ultimate in a convenient, highly portable data storage solution. FireLite combines the best features of todays hard drive designs in one attractive package. Quite simply, FireLite provides quality without compromise.
- Unique Magnesium Alloy housing - FireLites diminutive size and weight are made possible through the use of magnesium alloy for the drives housing - by weight, one of the strongest materials on the planet. Its thermal dissipation properties also help to wick away heat, increasing drive longevity. Hold it in your hand and youll sense the aesthetic and functional advantages of a metal housing over plastic.
- No power cord needed - FireWire is bus powered, meaning they can be powered directly through the FireWire cable used to connect them to your computer. For portability, this is the utmost in convenience...just plug it in and start using it! For configurations that do not supply sufficient cable power, FireLite can operate from an optional AC adapter.
- High performance - FireLites high performance hard drive mechanisms and electronics provide outstanding data transfer speeds with FireWire. For most software applications, you can use FireLite as an internal hard drive, then unplug it and take it with you when youre done!
- USB models support USB 2.0 High Speed operation (up to 480Mbits/sec) and they will also work with USB 1.1 ports at slower transfer rates.
- Plug and Play - For recent Windows and Macintosh operating system releases, such as Windows XP, Windows 2000, Window Me, and Mac OS X, no driver installation is required. This is an enormous convenience when working with a "borrowed" computer; just plug in FireLite to maintain access to important data or transfer large amounts of data between computer
WONDERFUL PRODUCT ! (2009-07-17)
We have TWO of these for a few years! It is used every day. Connected to computer 24/7. NO PROBLEM, not even one issue. Great quality, great performance. We are buying another product from this mfg company.
3 Words "BEST DRIVE EVER!!!" (2009-07-15)
I've had this exact model for over a year and droped it from 4ft off the ground on to a hard wood floor. I thought for sure it would'nt work. I plugged it in my PC and not only did it work, but all my data was still intact!!!
Not very sturdy for portable (2008-03-10)
I had two of these and they worked well. At the time I was travelling internationally and needed files that I could carry reliably.
However, the problem began when I was at my own office. The drive fell approximately 18 inches to the carpeted floor while connected. After that it ceased working. I had to pay huge price to a third party company to retrieve my valuable data.
This is supposed to be a portable device and, in my opinion, it should be able to take minor bumps and small drops that may occur in day-to-day use.
This device could not and did not. Hundreds of dollars later to get my data back.....
Smart disc does not offer data recovery. They sounded like I was an idiot for not having data backup of my info. Maybe I should, but maybe their device should be able to handle being "portable" just a little bit better.
To be fair, I also have an 80gig and since I am extremely careful (and no longer travel) it has performed well with no problems. But it makes me hesitant to use it as a backup drive because I may lose my data on an accidental drop.
Mac User Warning (2008-02-29)
As others have written, the entire SmartDisk USB line doesn't work properly with Mac laptops. I got one and it works fine with my wife's PC laptops, but won't even boot on my PowerBook G4. SmartDisk's tech support told me that the silver PowerBook line can't push enough juice through the USB cable to power the unit. So basically I have a silver paperweight -- nice. Avoid this product line at all costs.
Works great, good price (2008-01-27)
This external hard drive is fine; good price, small size and works great, very easy to use as most are. I liked that it is only 40GB and priced to match that, not everyone needs 200GB of portable storage but it seems I can't find anything smaller than 160GB now-a-days and you end up paying for that much storage.
