The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC HSM MACRO lens is fully compatible with all Nikon Digital SLR cameras including the D40 and D40X. This lens can be used with wide variety of subjects and it is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.9.. (20cm) throughout the entire zoom range. Maximum magnification of 1:2.3 enables close-up photography like a macro lens. The new lens design and multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 at 17mm wide angle and yet it is compact, with an overall length of 82.5mm (3.2..) and diameter 79mm (3.1..). It performs superbly even in relatively low light conditions indoors or at dusk. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which ensures fast AF speed as well as prevents the front of the lens rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods. This lens is also equipped with Zoom Lock Switch that eliminates ..Zoom Creep.. during transportation.
Amazon.com Product Description
Sigma's 17-70mm DC macro lens is an ideal large-aperture standard zoom lens for Nikon digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors, making it suitable for a wide variety of subjects. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 7.9 inches throughout the entire zoom range, along with a maximum magnification of 1:2.3 for close-up macro photography. The new lens design and multilayer lens coating, meanwhile, reduce flare and ghosting--a common problem with many digital cameras. Add in a Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element and two aspherical lens elements and you have a lens that can correct all types of aberrations while producing a high level of optical performance at every interval.
The lens also offers a large aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm wide-angle setting, yet is notably compact, with an overall length of 3.2 inches and a diameter of 3.1 inches. Plus, it performs superbly even in relatively low-light conditions, such as indoors or at dusk. Users will also appreciate the inner focusing system, which provides a fast autofocus speed while preventing the front of the lens from rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal-shaped lens hoods. Also equipped with a zoom lock switch that eliminates "zoom creep" during transport, the lens weighs 16 ounces and carries a one-year warranty.
I had to review it - BEST BUY FOR THE PRICE! (2010-07-14)
So I was looking for a zoom lens with a constant 2.8 aperture and I found this one which is not constant but it is waaaaaay much cheaper than a Nikon or even the Sigma 24-70mm/2.8 HSM which I wanted initially.
I have this lens for about 3 months now... I cannot say this is the best of the best, but for the price it works perfect! I have already done 3 weddings and some portrait shots and it does the job.
Quality and AF work very smooth... with my D300s.
Now I have this one and my Nikon 50mm/1.8 with me all the time...
If you're looking for a quick upgrade from a zoom lens that came with your camera, this could be the one.
Def. Sigma is doing a good job!

Well Worth the $ (2010-07-06)
This is a great closeup lens and especially for the money! The construction is of high grade, the focus quality throughout the range is as good as, if not better, than MUCH higher priced lenses and it has a very compact size too. I really like the zoom ability with this macro lens, unlike the normal 'prime' lens that you get with macro. An excellent macro lens for the money!
Great up grade! (2010-05-11)
Great value for an all around lens. The 17-70mm gives you a good range. This is for my Nikon D60 which has the VR f3.5-5.6/ 18-55mm kit lens. The Sigma has the HSM silent motor and provides a better low light f2.8 aperture. For the cost It works well for me.
Great while it lasted (2010-04-21)
I bought this lens in January and took it out a few times and had a great time shooting with it. Then in March I took it out to shoot some elk I came across in Montana and a lens just inside the outermost piece of glass fell off. Now I need to have it fixed. Could be a defect limited to mine as the most jarring it had was inside my case while driving down the highway. Would buy again based on the great picture clarity I got with it.
Great walkaround lens. (2010-03-02)
Not much to say but that this is a great walkaround lens. Macros are pretty good (you do need a tripod).
