Perfect for users who need backup, storage and large-volume exchange for office files, photos, music and even video clips, the Rugged All-Terrain is powered by the FireWire or USB connection, which means that it uses the power of the connected computer to operate and doesn't require an additional AC adapter or power cord.
The Rugged All-Terrain offers the triple-interface convenience of high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity (which is USB 1.1 backward compatible) along with both FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 interfaces. With this triple-interface functionality, along with the drive's driver-free and plug-and-play features, exchanging data between Macs and PCs is as easy as it gets. The Rugged All-Terrain even comes with a USB power-sharing cable for low powered USB hubs/computers. Measuring a mere 3.5 x 1 x 5.7 inches (WxHxD) and weighing less than nine ounces, the Rugged All-Terrain is designed to travel and will fit easily in your briefcase or backpack. Take it with you on business trips and vacations, or use it for transferring files from one desktop computer to another.
Included with the drive are LaCie software bundles to enhance its performance and functionality, including LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (for Mac and PC) and SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac).
Mobile, All-Terrain Protection
Designed exclusively for LaCie by world-renowned designer Neil Poulton, the Rugged All-Terrain is built like an off-road vehicle, ready to withstand the bumps and bruises of your travels. Its unique, scratch-protected aluminum shell and shock-resistant rubber bumper make it especially resistant to harsh elements. In fact, the drive is designed to withstand vertical drops of up to 35 inches while in non-operating mode. (Dropping the drive while it's in operation, however, could cause damage, so be careful!)
For additional styling points, the Rugged All-Terrain can be outfitted with additional colorful bumpers that will keep your drive protected. Easy-to-change and durable once on, they are made of the same quality rubber as the original bright orange Rugged sleeve. The optional set, which is sold separately, includes green-grey, blue-grey, and black bumpers.
The LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Portable Hard Drive is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

a lifesaver (2009-08-25)
I purchased this while in school and it really helped with me on my graphic design projects. If I started a project at school, I was able to load the files on the hard drive and bring it home and finish on my computer at home. The hard drive is rugged and I could toss it in my backpack with no issues. It hooked up my mac with no problems and does well on a PC too. I did not have to reformat anything. I have had this harddrive for 3 yrs now and I still have not used up all the space on it. Plus, the orange is funky cool.

This drive runs very hot with constant use. If you just need it for occasional use then you may be ok. I used mine everyday and after about 5 months it died.
LaCie Rugged Drives (2008-07-14)
LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 301015 120 GB USB 2.0/FireWire400/FireWire800 Portable Hard Drive
I'm a video producer and use these for media storage and editing both at the office and on the road using firewire cords. They're bus-powered, so they run off our Macs with ease -- and we have zero latency issues...even with HD material.
Phenomenal product. We've got at least half a dozen of them in varying storage sizes, and they're built for bear. They really are rugged and handle abuse -- drops, jostling, heat, cold -- on the road, in flight, in the field, etc.
When we shoot our video in file formats and have to deliver raw HD material at the end of a shoot vs. editing it, we buy one of these for the project and just hand them off to our clients when it's all done. Never had an issue and always had good feedback.
Times for Transfer (2008-06-27)
So far, so good with this product! For comparisons sake, I decided to copy a 5.66 GB video file from a G5 to this drive.
USB 2.0 - 6:15
FireWire 400 - 3:59
FireWire 800 - 2:05
I like the drive thusfar, but I have yet to work much with it.
Do NOT buy a LaCie drive (2008-06-23)
I bought this drive based on good user reviews. The drive failed within 6 months where previous drives (other brands) lasted 5+ years. Customer service is basically non-existent. You are not able to speak an actual person. You have to file complaints on their website and then re-log in to check their status. Bad, bad, bad. Like most people, I rely heavily on my external drive and am left high and dry when it goes bad. One needs immediate triage when a drive goes down NOT 3 weeks of worthless web posts. They will not stand behind their product and will divert all responsibility.
Do NOT buy this drive unless you need an expensive paperweight.
