Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.
But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.
More Space for More Media
With an additional 1 TB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 70 hours of DV video or 270,000 or over 1 million photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.
Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
Using the universal and fast USB 2.0 interface, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, this drive will work with both Macs and PCs. It's plug and play, and offers customizable formatting with the LaCie Setup Assistant. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.
The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (Windows and Mac), as well as LaCie SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac) making backups an easy and painless process.
The LaCie 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

it works! (2009-01-06)
Works good.
The only thing I would change, is to make them come pre-formated as FAT32.
So it can be used on both PC and MAC.
Because it formats by itself, depending what computer you plug this HD in.
Review of the LaCie Hard Disk Drive (2009-01-05)
This product has been very efficient, would suggest to others that is a great buy. Very easy set-up and attractive design. My only issue is that when you safely remove hard drive the power still stays on, besides that the hard drive works wonders.
Too Noisy! (2009-01-01)
Although I love the minimalistic design and the cute blue light, this hard disk is much noisier than the 1TB WD MyBook HD I have borrowed from a friend of mine.
I'm an iMac user, and one big reason why I love iMacs is that they don't make any noise. I was mad at the Western Digital HD because of the humming noise it added to the environment, but it wasn't until I got this LaCie that I realized how silent my work environment has been so far! The WD hard disk is noiseless compared to this one! The fan produces a constant humming sound which drives me crazy, to the point that I had to configure my Mac to turn it off automatically, regardless of the fact that this will affect the hard disk's life span. I'll probably only use this for backups so that it stays off most of the time.
If you got a noisy computer or work in a noisy environment and are merely looking for good design, go for it. But if you are really sensitive to noise, you definitely have better options in the market.
Take a Chance (2008-12-29)
You may get a good HD, or not. The Christmas present was DOA. A few moments with a tester indicated that the power supply was not working. (A problem entioned in other Amazon reviews for this 1tb drive.) Christmas Day, Thursday; did the Amazon paperwork for an exchange which arrived Monday. New HD powered up, initialized and is happily storing LOTS of files. Zero star for the DOA power supply. Five stars for Amazon return. Total of three.
LaCie 500GB USB hard drive (2008-12-29)
This hard drive works great, as advertised. I am using it to back up my Mac with Time Machine and have had no problems. The only thing that could be improved is a longer USB cable; the cable that came with the drive is only about 2 ft. long.
