With 500 GB of disk space, the LaCie Desktop Hard Disk lets you store up to 35 hours of DV video or 125,000 songs or 550,000 photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.
Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
Using the universal and fast USB 2.0 interface, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, this drive will work with both Macs and PCs. Just plug it in and play it. The drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't require any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.
The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software for both platforms, making backups a quick and easy process.
Smart, Compact Design
Utilizing a fanless design, the Desktop Hard Disk is nearly silent, even when you are working on intensive applications. This means that as you work on creating your audio files, you won't be disturbed by the background noise of a fan creeping into your recordings.
The drive features a sleek, black stylish design, letting it blend into any work environment. Sturdy and compact, it's constructed with a tough metal top cover for durability and heat dissipation, making it easy to carry your important files around with you wherever you need them. Measuring just 4.4 x 1.6 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing less than two pounds, the drive can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease. The design is also stackable, which will save space when you want to further increase your capacity by adding another drive.
The LaCie 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Disk is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Lacie Drives Not Recommended (2009-01-03)
I purhcased this Lacie drive in July of 07 and it has stopped working - now Jan 09. I'm not a heavy user of these drives. I use it for backup storage only. I purchased this drive to replace another Lacie drive that imploded after 1.5 years of average use. Sadly, I hadnt backed up my data in approximately 4 months and am now facing an "invasive recovery procedure" to get the data back. Total price for recovery if we decide to go ahead is $2000. Bottom line, after having two different Lacie drives perform well day to day - only to completely implode after about a year and a half - I would opt for another brand.
It works (2008-12-24)
I took away one star because it doesn't have a power switch. It works fine, I think there is not much that can be said about a the external drives in this category.
Had it on for about a year, no complaints. (2008-12-10)
This is a good external thus far. I bought it a year ago and its been on every day/night. No complaints.
Lost files when reboot computer (2008-11-25)
About 2 months or so after purchasing this product I noticed that many files that I had been storing in it were getting zeroed out and leaving only the file icon with no data. At first I wasn't sure how this was happening or when it even occurred until I went to open the files affected, because the file appeared to still be there. I finally realized when this was happening after one time when I restarted my compute and noticed I had 12G available on the drive due to it being such a significant change. I have had several other 5-10G losses since and am weary of turning my computer off anymore.
When I inquired to LaCie about this issue they told me that I would need to reformat my drive and it should fix the problem. My problem what I'm supposed to do with the 400+G of data I have remaining on this drive that I would like to keep in tact. They don't seem to have any suggestions for that that don't require spending at least another $100 or more. If I was trying to spend that much on a hard drive I would have done so in the first place. Now I'm going to take that $100+ and get a drive from a different manufacturer I guess and toss out this unreliable peice of junk.
Fits my need (2008-10-15)
Got the product quickly and attached to system - it works just like I need it to work.
