Beautiful, Stunning Design
Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.

But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.

More Space for More Media
With 500 GB of disk space, the LaCie Desktop Hard Disk lets you store up to 35 hours of DV video or 125,000 songs or 550,000 photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.

Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
With three connection interfaces, you'll be able to get the hard drive up and running quickly with your computer at home, your laptop at work, and just about any computer you need to connect to. The eSATA interface allows for a blistering 1.5 Gbps data transfer speed, perfect for video editing and other intensive work. FireWire 400 is also supported, which has long been a favorite of Mac users and provides 400 Mbps speeds. The nearly universal USB 2.0 interface is supported as well, and offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps.

The LaCie Hard Disk works with both Macs and PCs and is simple to setup. It's plug and play and offers automatic formatting with LaCie Setup Assistant with customizable features. The hard disk features a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.

The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (Windows and Mac), as well as LaCie SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac) making backups an easy and painless process.

The LaCie 500 GB eSATA/FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews

beautiful design (2009-01-06)
I have always had good luck with LaCie, this seems to be no different. It is being used on a mac. Very "2001 space odyssey"in design.

Intego Backup Assistant issue (2009-01-06)
This LaLaCie Hard Disk 750 GB FireWire 400/USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard Drive, Design by Neil Poulton 301314UCie Hard Disk drive was easy to connect and use manually. However, the free Intego Backup Assistant is difficult to figure out & won't automatically backup my MAC's home folder, which contains all my photos, unless I pay for an upgraded version. So, I've been doing this manually. Not at all what I expected.

Great Drive (2009-01-02)
I have been using this drive for a week with my MacBook with no problems so far. Obviously time will tell. Install was a breeze. Like the power switch on the back and love the firewire connection. Firewire is essential for me as I have numerous other USB devices that I do not like to daisy chain. Firewire is made for daisy chaining. Very fast and extremely quite drive. Will update if the drive gives me errors.

Looks great, Firewire is fast (2008-12-31)
Very happy with this drive so far. I was amazed at the difference in speed backing up over firewire rather than USB. This drive is very compact and looks nice sitting on the computer desk.

Great drive so far (2008-12-30)
I've had this LaCie 1TB drive for about two months now, and it's been smooth sailing so far. I use it with my iMac via the FireWire 400 port, and it's on whenever I'm using the computer (between about 4 and 16 hours a day). It has become my primary drive for everything from playing music to reading documents, looking at photos and editing standard-def video in Final Cut, and it seems plenty fast to do all of these things. The FireWire connection option is important to me since I do a lot of video editing and USB 2.0 isn't widely regarded as fast enough to be effective for video editing (eSATA is supposedly even better than Firewire, but I don't have the ability to use it).

Note:
The only thing that is different about having all my files stored on this drive versus on the iMac's internal drive is that the LaCie drive will "sleep" after several minutes of not being in use while the iMac itself is still on. When it "wakes up" (when you try to access a file on it), it takes about 8-10 seconds to do so, during which time you have to wait. For me, this equates to maybe a dozen or so times a day when I have to wait 8-10 seconds. I don't know if there is a way to adjust/prevent this or not, but even if there isn't, it doesn't bother me very much. I usually just drum on my desk or talk to myself for the few seconds until it kicks in.

All in all, a great drive with great connectivity options. Would buy again.
