Noisy & Hot (2008-12-04)
I have owned this drive for several months and primarily use it as a network drive for media storage. There are a couple of noticeable and annoying traits apparent. First, the unit has a glaring indicator light which required a piece of electricians tape to make it merely tolerable. Secondly, the drive is extremely noisy and seems rather poorly made. Lastly, the heat generated by this model requires it to have considerable airflow to keep it from becoming nearly inoperable. I would definitely not purchase this brand again and strongly warn anyone considering the purchase of this model to investigate it thoroughly.

Very portable for so much space (2008-10-28)
I have a small business and needed a way to back-up my computer daily and take the files with me. This has turned out to be a great fit. It's 1TB yet very light and the perfect size to put in the bag I take home every night. The back-up speed is also great and Time Machine on my MAC can fit the entire harddrive back-up and then some.

Fan noise noticeable, but not a deal-breaker. (2008-08-30)
I hate to write a review after only having this product for two days (since longevity / life of the drive is what I think is most important when rating a HDD), but I felt the need to respond to the 3-star reviewer from August 29th who said the fan noise was too loud.

I use this drive with my Macbook Pro, and while I do notice the fan noise, it's not going to drive me crazy. I keep mine on all the time since I use it for my Time Machine backups.

As for the performance of the drive: mine is connected via the Firewire 800 port. The write speed is clocking in at 55 MB/s (440 Mb/s) and the read speed is clocking in at 75.2 MB/s (601.6 Mb/s). I used the AJA KONA system test for both of these benchmarks.

Fan is too loud for me (2008-08-30)
I just bought this drive and started to set it up with my iMac. I didn't realize how nice it is the the iMac doesn't have a fan. When I powered up the Iomega drive the fan was so noticeable that 3 minutes later I had it powered down and back in the box. I am going to find a fanless unit possibly from LaCie. If you don't mind the fan noise or have the unit in a location isolated from your computer this may be a great drive. The reviews of the smaller drives have been good. But for me this was a deal killer.
