Buyer beware (2008-12-18)
I'm a Mac mini owner and I already have two LaCie external hard drives (250Gb and 500Gb, both purchased from Amazon) that have worked flawlessly for two years and one year, respectively. I wanted to buy a new 1Tb external drive and migrate my data to it from my other drives. I spent about a week comparing drives and I decided, based on price and features, that this Iomega MiniMax was the right choice, so I bought it from Amazon.
I was bitterly disappointed. When I opened the new box that arrived from Amazon and removed the drive from the plastic bag inside, the top of the unit was covered with scratches and wear marks. Two other sides of the drive were also scratched, although not as thoroughly worn as the top of the unit. It was clearly not a new drive, even though it was shipped in a new, sealed box with cables sealed in new bags from an Amazon warehouse. (Let me be clear: I ordered and received this directly from Amazon, not from a marketplace seller. It arrived with another new product that I ordered in the same box from Amazon's warehouse.)
I did not pay for a used drive, and moreover a used drive defeats the purpose of migrating data to a new drive. I returned the drive to Amazon today, but I don't know if I will receive a full refund. If I am refunded the full amount of the purchase, I will consider amending this review and raising my rating, but I'm afraid that I've been defrauded and that I will lose the money that I tried so hard to spend wisely.
My advice: Beware of this product unless you are happy to buy a used drive for the price of a new one. You might consider purchasing a LaCie drive instead.
You'd think Apple made it. (2008-11-26)
Recognized by my system right away. Plugging into firewire port and stacked beneath my Mac Mini, Timemachine automatically recognized it and offered to backup. Perfect match for my media center.
Easy Setup (2008-10-15)
It was extremely easy to setup the drive. Just plugged it in and it was Mac formated and found by the OS. It has been running 24/7 since I purchased (only a few weeks now), but is quiet, not terribly hot, and functioning as intended.
