Customer Reviews

Very good external (2010-04-01)
This is a very easy external hard drive to use and I love the fact that there is no need to use a power adapter. This external also runs very quiet, you will not even notice that it is running when it is plugged in. I have accidentally dropped this product a few times (moving the laptop and accidentally pulling it off the desk) and it still runs just as well as the day I bought it. I have had other hard drives die from being dropped from lower distances. Almost forgot that it is a very nice design and takes up very little space. Highly recommend.

Too hot (2010-03-21)
The product does what it's supposed to do and looks nice, uses either firewire or usb, isn't bundled with useless software, etc. To rate the product 5-stars and say I needed extra capacity and this product deserves your well-earned dollars because I'm able to store another 500GB externally is senseless - like, I bought a car and it's awesome because it's able to be driven.

My problem is the unit gets way too hot. Sure, the casing acts as a heat sink but, still, I don't want it burning my leg while I'm sitting on the couch. Again, the metal casing gets extremely hot.

I have a smaller-sized WD Passport with the same capacity that never gets *hot*. That drive is just as reliable and I throw perhaps even more I/O at it. Will buy the WD Passport again, won't buy this IOMega.

Awesome portable hard drive until it fell form a chair (2009-12-08)
I liked it very much even if it came with Mac fomart. As I own a Mac I didn't realize it wouldn't work on a PC until I had to transfer 100GB and it just didn't work. Let's say it was bad luck.

The most amazing thing is you read all this reviews saying this portable hard drive is the roughest and more durable hard drive out there. Have you seen a normal S-ATA hard drive (the actual disc)? Well... put a couple of rubber holders (less than 1cm thick) inside the beautiful white metal case and you get a Iomega Ego Portable Hard Drive. It really sucks if you get to see what's inside. Are you wondering: why did I opened the beautiful white case? Because it fell from my chair and it completely broke down. The case was obviously intact but no computer would recognize it (PC or Mac). It just died. Would you spect your pictures from 2 years getting lost (simply lost) because this ultimate portable hard drive fell from a chair (1.3 feet height)?. I didn't thought it would happen to me but it did and I warn you about it. If you're going to leave it on your desk forever (get a NON portable half priced hard drive). If you plan to carry it as your laptop then get another brand.

Iomega eGo good to go (2009-09-12)
I bought this for a MacBook Pro 13" to use as a Time Machine backup. It was smaller than I thought it would be, and fits easily in one hand. As soon as I plugged it in with the included "special" USB cable, Time Machine came up and asked if I wanted to use that disk for Time Machine. That was all I had to do. This one also has a Firewire 400 cable included, which I would have liked to use, but the MacBook Pro has only Firewire 800 and I haven't gotten an adapter (or adapter cable) yet. For Time Machine, USB works just fine. Be aware that the documentation states that some computers might require the use of the special USB cable included with the device. On the computer end, it splits into two (one for data, one for a little extra power). On the MacBook Pro, both are needed for reliable operation, and I was lucky that both USB ports are on the same side of the laptop. I have an older MacBook Pro 15" that has one USB on each side, which would not have worked with USB. On the other hand, that laptop has Firewire 400, so I would have used that instead. For now, USB is doing pretty well for Time Machine, but I may still get an adapter later on. I reduced the score by one star because of the minor hassle with the special USB cable. If you plan to use USB, don't get this drive unless you have 2 powered USB ports side by side.

good but could be better (2009-08-21)
Generally firewire is useless. The company should do away with the firewire and focus exclussively on the USB ports. The drive is easy to use but one must be reminded that the drive will need to be powered into 2 USB ports for it to work properly. This the company does not disclose before purchase. And if you need Technical assistance, save yourself a headache and try to solve the problem yourself, as the technical assistance being offered from the company is useless. They will make you frustrated and not give you any real technical assistance. This was my experience with this company. Because of the technical assisstance I would not buy this product again nor can I recommend this product to anyone.
