Buy the LG Super multi instead (2009-11-07)
This was great. Easy to install, easy to use, and just my luck only worked half the time. This would only burn half the lightscribe top layer. The disk would have to be inserted numerous times and sometimes the entire picture would burn. I thought I had purchased faulty disks--not the case! I purchased a faulty burner. HP has the worst customer service (it feels wrong puting the two phrases in the same sentence). Never again!
Nice burner! (2009-10-11)
This DVD burner is great. Easy to install and easy to use. The only thing is that lightscribe is quite slow. However, this has nothing to do with this burner. It's due to the current lightscribe technology.
Pretty good burner (2009-09-01)
I like this burner. It was very easy to set up and so far seems to work great although it tends to burn slowly with my computer. The Nero software that came with it was only a 30 day trial, so you will need to upgrade or purchase another software program to really utilize the CD/DVD burning feature. I enjoy the lightscribe feature. It's fun to be able to put photos on the disk to really describe what's on there. [...] has tons of great templates that can be downloaded for free. Overall, the burner is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone.
Great on mac (2009-08-27)
I have owned this drive for about a year. I took a risk buying this drive as it did not say it had mac support. I have used burned all types of disks including lightscribe, and dual layer DVDs on but Mac Os 10.5 and Ubuntu and everything worked perfectly. Have to download your own burning software and lightscribe software from its website works great.

HP 20x External Super Multi DVD (Lightscribe) HP1040E
I have had one of these for several years and used it to copy and create DVD's. Just recently bought one for a family member and she is happy with it too.
I was surprised it is still the current model. Shows there was nothing to fix.
