- Averages color temperature of all light in a given scene
- Provides accurate white balance measurement
- Works with any digital camera that has manual white balance feature
- Loop Strap Included
The White Balance Lens Cap is great for use with digital cameras. Just place the cap over your lens, point your camera at a subject area, and the incoming light is diffused to create an average white balance for a particular scene (check camera manufacturer's manual for setting white balance). The White Balance Lens Cap easily slips on to the front of any appropriately sized lens, or a lens with a protective filter. Even if your lens has a bayonet mount on the outside, simply use the bayonet adapter provided. The lens cap comes with a handy loop to connect it to a camera strap or strap lug so you don't lose the cap.
Unpredictable (2010-06-23)
I did not find this device useful. Face it, if you know enough about white balance to custom set it, then you know that a true white balance (i.e. one derived from a neutral gray card) is not the real issue. The issue is to give a specific pleasing feel to your photographs. Most often this will require a warmer white balance than would be metered. You can set it in your favorite photo software and is easiest to do (with the most consistent results) if you start by shooting RAW. What this Lens Cap Disk does is average the light falling on the camera sensor - it is after all a diffuser - to help set a custom white balance. To some extent this will compensate for non-uniform lighting conditions. However, I did not find the results more pleasing than those from my Nikon D70's auto white balance setting. They were also unpredictable.
My impression is that the much more expensive ExpoImaging ExpoDisc product line will result in warmer images. I have not had a chance to try it. If I decide to pursue the white balance filter option further, I think that is the way I will go.
Doesn't fit (2010-02-26)
Doesn't fit my 72mm lens. No included "bayonet adapter" either. It's cheap though, so I'll just carry it in my pocket and use it as needed.
Great idea, however... (2009-06-24)
I ordered this hoping it would solve my need to adjust white balance in post processing, however 2 things stand out, one is that this is made entirely of plastic, which does not screw on or off very easily. I experimented indoors with indirect florescent lights shooting a yellow wall that appeared whitish with my Canon 450d's auto white balance.
Following the virtually non existent directions I placed the cap on, shot in the same direction I would be shooting, etc..., set the custom white balance and the shot was just another shade of whitishness that I had shot before hand.
I had better results zooming in the white ceiling and using that shot to use for a custom white balance (the wall actually was close to the actual color after I took the shot) - I cannot recommend you waste your money on this.
