I love it! (2009-04-24)
This case fits my Pentax SLR pretty nicely with some room to shove in the camera strap and extra batteries. As clumsy as I am, I droped the case with camera in it several times and it saved my camera! It's also pretty much water proof too. I was out in the rain for a few hours and the case was soked but the camera remained pretty dry (I had a piece of paper in the case too and it was dry). And the price is hard to beat!
uncertain future . . . (2009-03-27)
One of the smaller SLR holsters, this sleek-looking item by Kodak, can house a camera with lens up to about 3.5 inches. The case appears to be constructed of a mixture of canvas, nylon, plastic, and synthetic materials. There do not appear to be any major issues with the case, however long-term durability may be questionable.
The holster has decent padding all around the inside compartment, with just a bit more in the flip-up top cover. On the underside of the cover is a zippered mesh compartment for small items. The handle on top is rubberized, and might be a bit tight for those with larger hands. Worn at the hip, the case should provide pretty good basic protection. A small, zippered compartment on the outside is a bit tight, but can accommodate accessories like spare memory cards, or batteries. The zipper tags are made of soft rubber, and are split into two parts. Not a good design, or choice of materials, as they probably will either tear off from use, or get brittle and deteriorate over time.
The belt loops are sewn to the case, and appear to be the same canvas-like material as the case. Hopefully, the loops will not tear off under stress, but the durability and reliability this material under stress appears questionable. Nylon loops, attached to a reinforcing nylon band on the case, is the method of choice for a safe, secure, high quality construction.
A rather unattractive looking shoulder strap is included. The attachment fittings on the strap and case are plastic, rather than metal. Using plastic for the clips, a critical part subject to stress, is asking for trouble.
The case looks sharp, and will probably do an adequate job for general use. It may be best suited to those that want to travel light, as it can only accommodate a camera with a short lens, and a minimal amount of accessories. If you have a thicker neoprene type strap, it will probably fit, if you wrap the strap around the lens.
At this price level, you can't expect perfection, however when the safety of your valuable SLR is at risk, poor design and inferior materials are real concerns. How well the case holds up long term, is the key question. If you don't expect to use a holster very often, this might work out fine. However, if you will be using a holster a lot, you might want to look at one that is of more rugged construction.
Great DSLR camera holster case (2009-01-31)
I wanted as small a camera holster as possible that would house my new Fuji Finepix S100 FS, and probably a Nikon D40 without lens hood. While many reviewers recommended another cheaper brand, you do get what you pay for. For a few more dollars, the Kodak Gear holster is very-well constructed, and the padding is just right.
The fit was a tiny bit snug, but after a few hours the material adapted to the camera and fits fine. I do sometimes apply a bit of pressure to the top cover so it zips more smoothly, but that's not a problem. Keep in mind there will be almost no extra room for accessories--maybe just lens cleaner and cloth. I did squeeze an extra rechargeable battery into the too-tight front zipper pocket. That's the one thing I would redesign.
The case includes a convenient strong top carry handle, and the shoulder strap is both comfortable and secure. However, I prefer to wear the case on my waist, so I went to the big box hardware store and, for a few bucks, I bought a 2-inch wide black nylon web tool belt with snap closure that slid right into the sturdy belt loop on the back of the holster. Really nifty. The 2 inch belt feels secure and evenly distributes the weight.
Great case!! (2009-01-14)
I am delighted with this purchase. It has more padding for the camera than the cases I've seen in the stores locally. I took it to Europe and it kept my Rebel Xti safe and handy during the trip. It is lightweight and has sufficient pockets, yet takes little space. I'm very happy with it.
Good bag for short lens. (2008-11-13)
I am looking for a bag I can shoot out of with camera, lens and hood attached up to 300mm. I had hoped this one would do it. I will work with a short lens. MY 40D Body fits a little tight so I can't use it. Price is good.
