Product Description
This exciting new addition to the EOS System combines compact size and affordability with an added dose of features and sophistication. Improving on the previous model, Speedlite 420EX, the new 430EX can now be set into manual flash mode (full power~1/64). Flash compensation can be set on the flash unit, and manual control of the flash zoom head is now possible. Improvements in its circuitry make recycle time 40% faster, and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable "slave unit."

Great Flash (2010-01-09)
Very easy to use and works great. Recommend using lithium bateries for best performance!

good flash (2009-11-07)
I have this flash and I really like it. I use it all the time. I have also used the newer less expensive version (I think it's the same name with just a 2 added). I liked it just as well, and I think it's faster personally. If you don't need to use it with pro or timed lighting you'll probly like the less expensive one just as well or better.

Oldie, but still goodie. (2009-09-13)
I purchased this Flash unit as I was told it would synch wirelessly with my existing flash. Little did I know it had to be another Canon it synched with, so now I am on the hunt for a master for my 430EX slave. Looking at the 580EX, if I can only find a good deal on that.

The 430EX has performed flawlessly and although the shoe is plastic, I believe with care it should remain in my use for quite some time longer. With Gary Fong's Lightsphere Universal, the flash provides even better performance, mainly because the 430EX can pivot and flip in all directions allowing me to bounce-flash off of ceilings and or walls, no matter what angle I shoot my subject at. :)

Best investment I have made in quite a while. Maybe that'll change once I get myself the newer flash unit.

All in all this is a seemingly solid product, recycle time is acceptable.

Does the job. (2009-08-16)
I bought the 430EX as my first flash. I wanted something that I could bounce off the ceiling and walls, but I couldn't really afford the 580. This flash greatly improved the quality of my pictures, because even if it's quite dim in a room I can point the flash at the ceiling and *click* get the shot without it even looking like I used a flash.

The 580 is better than the 430 because it is more powerful, and can be used as a master. (the 430 can only be used as a slave.)But if you only have one flash then you can't use the 580 as a master anyway, so that means that for $250 more dollars all you get is some extra power. What I recommend is buy the 430 and then if you decide that you want more than one flash, you can always buy a 580, then you will have a master and a slave. But if you choose to only use the one flash then you can put the extra $150 toward a new lens. :P That's what I did, I bought the 430, and then later bought the 580 and am now using them both. I love it.

quick and light (2009-07-05)
good sized speedlight if you need something light to bring along to casual events when you might not need the extra light. doesnt recycle as fast as teh 580mkII but does the job.

one thing that bugs me is when you slip the speedlight back into the protective sleeve is that you might switch the unit on because of teh placement of the power switch.
