Very good elbow style power adapter (2010-02-23)
I purchased this power adapter specifically for its right-angle "elbow" style plug end. All of my past power adapters failed due to a lack of this very feature. They failed from broken connections or internal fraying as a result of excessive bending of the cord near the plug end.
I really like the elbow style plug end because the cord is going to bend away anyway and this prevents damage at that spot. The elbow plug end is also detachable from the power cord, so that any accidental jerk of the cord (like tripping over it) will simply disconnect the cord from the plug and prevent damage to the cord.
Pros:
-Elbow style plug end
-Plug end is detachable
-Transformer box remains relatively cool (less than warm, not VERY HOT like many others I've encountered)
Cons: (Detachable plug end only)
-Potential to lose it
-Can be accidentally connected upside-down** resulting in no power (but doesn't seem to cause damage)
** The connection is round with a flat side to ensure proper orientation, but the female end is made of somewhat soft rubber. So a little effort, or anyone not really paying attention, may accidentally overcome that form fit and connect it upside down. The power adapter will APPEAR to not work. If you look, or feel it, it's obvious that it is connected wrong. I've done this a twice and have not noticed any damage to the adapter or laptop.
Excellent, Recommended (2009-09-01)
My original Compaq AC adapter died and I was worried about buying alternate brand replacements - especially after reading the negative reviews. I don't know if I got lucky but this one works just fine as a replacement. The right-angle bend is pretty useful, too. The "brick" portion is a little thicker than my original one but when it comes to AC adapters, more metal tends to mean it runs cooler and is less likely to overload and burn-out, so I don't mind.
The DC cable that attaches to the notebook is thinner than the original which kind of concerns me - part of the reason my original broke was breaks in the DC cable copper wires inside. These breaks caused microscopic arcs that literally melted holes in the outer plastic sheath - looked like a rat had been gnawing on the cable, except that the plastic showed clear signs of melting. So I don't wind this cable at all (and I recommend others not wind theirs either. When packing the AC adapter just gather the cable in broad loops to protect the little copper wires inside.
But that's not a problem of this product - it's all AC adapters. All in all, this product is a good buy. It's worth it to pay extra for good quality than to buy a cheap one that overloads or has bad connections inside that break after minimal use.
